Integrating entertainment into the main app experience

I joined the Adaptive team as a Senior Product Designer, leading the design of the entertainment experience for the Riyadh Air mobile app. My role quickly grew from focusing on screen design to taking charge of how Entertainment fits into the main app as a whole.

I collaborated with IBM’s app team, Panasonic’s seat monitor team, and the client to keep the experience consistent across platforms. Our main UX strategy focused on the user experience and the needs at each stage of the passenger journey.

Shaping the UX Strategy Around the Passenger Timeline

The UX strategy was to adapt the app for each stage of the passenger’s journey. Rather than showing the same content throughout, the interface adapts to where the user is in their trip and what they need at that moment.

Passengers can browse movies, games, and music before their flight and set up a personal library in advance. This makes it easier to enjoy entertainment onboard and turns it from a last-minute decision into a planned part of the trip. During the flight, the app connects to the seat and gives instant access to the personal library. Users can continue with their content while still viewing flight information using entertainment features.

The app provides helpful cues and suggestions, such as showing which content fits the time left in the flight or letting users know if they might not finish a title before landing.

The goal was to create a smooth, connected experience where entertainment, flight details, and other features all work together in one app.I first met with the team to understand their goals and needs, analyzed the existing prototypes to pinpoint improvement areas, and collected feedback to optimize the product. I then focused on refining the user flow and designing wireframes on usability and accessibility.

Android & iOS

The client decided to design separate experiences for Android and iOS, focusing on the specific behaviors and expectations of each user group to improve usability and the overall experience.

The IBM team developed the design system for both native platforms. I designed and contributed to the entertainment components, ensuring they met Android and iOS guidelines. I also worked closely with the IBM team to keep the app aligned, scalable, and consistent.

The results

The final experience delivers a journey-based entertainment system seamlessly integrated into the Riyadh Air app. It supports device continuity and reinforces a passenger-centric product vision. I appreciated the opportunity to work closely with talented teams on this project. This experience strengthened my approach to collaboration, systems thinking, and designing within complex product ecosystems.
